Further information from the Cockshutt 50 manual. Belt pulley speed on the tractor is 1000 rpm at rated engine rpm of 1650. This gives a belt speed in around the 3100 feet per minute and will hopefully be hitting the 3400 rpm point on the hammer mill. More information you didn't ask for.

A pto is generally 540 rpm. New big or tiny tractors might have 1000 rpm as well. All shaft couplers are the same diameter, so rpm is a useful number to compare. A belt pulley can be different sizes on different tractors, so rpm is a worthless measure big or little pulley will give you a very different speed. So they are rated at feet per minute.

Family had a hammermill powered by a Farmall M pulley and belt. Got tired of hooking up the M and belt every time we needed it, so we got an old Olds Rocket 88 V8 engine and trans, built a frame out of 8X10s and hooked it up permanently. All belt driven and just staked down with no connection to tractor except belt. Your tractor pully will be a 6" face pully so do not go any wider but you can go narrower.

The hammermill should run at 2,000 to 3,000 rpm's the pto runs at 540 so the tire speeds it up. I mounted a driveshaft in the middle of the wheel and the tire runs against the belt pulley. I bought the old hammermill for just 5 and got the plow wheel for free. It grinds up 3,000 tbs. per hour.
