Well, this is my take. The footprint of the Nichols is actually quite small for the quality of the mill. There are only a few small mills, and even the baby Bridgeports are bigger than the Nichols. The vertical head allows it to do quite a bit more, and I see it as being very useful, but as everyone knows, it's a costly piece of tooling.

I believe the Nichols was the successor to the Brown and Sharpe Plain Production Milling Machine. Nichols modernized the design and offered several variants in order to broaden it's application. Basically, thogh it is the same mill. These machines were the mainstay of small milling production.

If I put one on the Nichols the mill will be dedicated to that head, which will greatly simplify the installation. The Van Norman I would like to keep using in the traditional modes if possible, and I can't envision how that huge head could go on there and swing out of the way for horizontal milling, for example. Any ideas would be appreciated.
