The endmill will pick up a dull silver appearance, that's the aluminum embedded in the coating. As long as you have coolant running on it it'll work for what you are trying to do.

I have been using about 1/2 the typically recommended speeds (say 50 sfm for steel, 30 for stainless, 100 for aluminum) as a starting point. This is with HSS or cobalt end mills and the occasional carbide, some with TiN or TiCN coatings, some with none.

This makes 6063 a little harder to machine; it's softer and gummier. When you're cutting aluminum extrusions, use really sharp tools, good lubrication, and watch your chip clearance.

Damn. 40 for a side cutting end mill. My mill maxes out at 4200 RPM and a 1/2" EM is something like 525 SFM at full speed. This barely makes a dent in the range for carbide in aluminum.
