Chip: Is you lathe a rear drive or underneath? If it a rear drive most people pull the spindle, insert the belt then put things back together. Also give a person a chance to clean the spring loaded felt oil wicks, alot of people also replace the fiber washer under the outboard take up nut with needle bearings.

The belts are metric so you need to do the conversion. Most counter guys in parts stores are used to just looking the make and model of car so it may be a little difficult to get the belt you need. Usually though, the length of the belt is part of the manufacturer's part number, but may not be part of the sku number in the parts store nomenclature.

Re: 1938 9" South Bend Lathe motor replacement question. You probably need a V belt pulley on the motor and on the driven shaft. I'm guessing it was originally driven off of a line shaft, hence the flat belt drive. You would still use a flat belt on the step pulleys. I assume this is driven from the top and not from underneath.

Project South Bend 9A AKA "The General" is a South Bend Lathe Model 9A which I acquired in 2019. It was a garage find from my wifes Uncle Paul, who purchase the lathe from the original owner sometime in the 1960s. I wouldn't spend the money or time involved to install a vbelt drive, on an underdrive (on an overhead or horizontal you can use a regular serpentine without cutting and gluing,and they work excellent) they are a good set up, asis, with the right belt. I use a RPC, but a friend has VFD's on his lathe, mill, and jigbore. He loves 'em.

Step 3: Grab and Align New Belt. Title says it all. Be sure that you have the correct size (length and width) for your sander type. Make sure to place the belt in the correct direction. As you can see in the picture there are arrows on the inside of the belt. There should be a clearly marked arrow on your sander as well.
