Founded by Joseph Gallego in the 1790s, the mill gained international reputation for the superior type of flour that was shipped from there to Europe and South America.

Hard to see, the ruins of the mill peek out from under the diagonal tree on the left. The mill site sits on the north bank, barely visible poking through the trees. Large rock formations jut out from the north bank and spill into the river. A dam once stretched diagonally across the river here, and stone foundation offers a path to the far side.

Billingsgate Roman House and Baths. The Billingsgate Bath House is a 2,000yearold ruin, discovered in 1848. The artefacts inside show that it was built in the 2nd century on the bank of the River Thames, with a lovely waterfront view. The Romans used it right up until they abandoned Londinium.

The Archibalds decided against rebuilding the mill. They sold the 1870 mill asis to Palon and Watson, local elevator operators who rebuilt and operated the mill into the twentieth century.
