I'm using a Barley Crusher at the stock setting (forget what it is offhand). For an average strength beer ( OG) I generally get 90% efficiency with Rahr 2 row as the base malt. That can drop as low as 80% when using other base malts (Maris Otter, Pilsner, wheat). I often switch up what I'm using, and my average efficiency has been 84%.

Unlike the Corona Mill its actually meant for grain with a large hopper. It does the same thing as a Monster mill for 1/3 of the price. It lasts. I've had mine for 5 years and it works like new after 100's and 100's of pounds of grain, 25 pounds at a time. It only costs around 90 if you get it on sale.

At 115 it's not a small investment, but grain mills can easily get above 200 so it's not on the higher end of the price range. It comes with a 7 lb capacity aluminum hopper. If you want a 15 lb hopper, the total cost comes to 138. I decided to save 23 and do the minimal extra effort of refilling the smaller hopper.

I have this issue with my Barley Crusher as I've had mine for 6 or 7 years now and the rollers are likely pretty worn. I started conditioning my grains which helps the rollers pull them through. I let the grains sit for 10 minutes after conditioning, then run through the mill.

There are lots of good grain mills out there. A few that will work with this project are: The Barley Crusher (7 15lb versions) Monster Mill. Captain Crush Grain Mill. Most grain mills come with a hand crank. Removing the crank arm exposes the shaft which usually fits into the chuck of a power drill.

Maybe give it a nickname. We like to call ours Smash Graindicoot. Put the grain in zipclose bag, and roll it until it's suitably crushed. If this is your primary method of crushing malts, you might want to invest in a marble rolling pin. Grains can be tough little nuggets and may dent a wooden rolling pin.
