I would say 8" is minimum (based on the original Rockwell manual), but I have a 10" (horizontal only) Palmgren which is low profile (31/4") and actually pretty light (36 lb). The 8" in the Rockwell manual (catalog # 21835) is a horizontal/vertical type and 35 lb. I've not seen a H/V that's currently available of that size and that light. Jeff.

It's in remarkably good shape; most of the moving parts are free, the ways look very clean, the table surface is relatively free from dings and not a whole of obvious rust.
