For a 1/2" diameter High Speed Steel cutter in mild steel, the proper speed is around 500 rpm. For a 1/4" cutter, double that to 1000; double again to 2000 for a 1/8" cutter. Conversely, halve that to 250 rpm for a 1" cutter. For cutting tool steel, speeds drop; for aluminum they increase.
